Raw episodes are too granular to use directly. If we fed every episode into every conversation, we'd overwhelm the AI with irrelevant detail.

Instead, we perform what we call semantic compilation—transforming raw episodes into structured context that's relevant to the current moment.

Here's how this works:

When you start a conversation with Pulse, we retrieve recent episodes across all types. We analyze what you've been working on, who you've been communicating with, what tasks are active, what notes you've been developing.

We then compile this into a coherent context summary: "Over the past week, you've been focused primarily on the product launch. You've had three meetings with the design team about the landing page, exchanged 14 emails with the marketing contractor about copy, and created 6 tasks related to launch logistics. Your most recent note was a pre-mortem analysis of potential launch failures."

This context isn't shown to you—you already know it. But it's provided to the AI, which now understands not just your words but your world.

Our default retention window is 30 days for most episode types, though you can adjust this based on your needs. Memory should capture recent context, not become a permanent surveillance system. The goal is operational support, not comprehensive archiving.

Transparency is non-negotiable. You can see what Pulse remembers. You can ask "What do you know about my work with Sarah?" and get an honest answer. No hidden inferences, no opaque models, no black boxes that you can't inspect.

And deletion means deletion. If you want to forget something, we forget it. No backups, no archives, no "but we need it for training." Your memory, your control. This isn't just policy—it's architecture.

Privacy and capability aren't fundamentally in conflict—they're in tension that can be managed through careful design. We believe it's possible to have memory that's powerful enough to be useful while remaining private enough to be trustworthy.

The Forgetting Problem

Interestingly, forgetting is as important as remembering.

Human memory is highly selective. You don't remember every meal you've eaten or every commute you've taken. Your brain constantly filters, compresses, and discards information that isn't relevant to your current needs.

This selectivity isn't a limitation—it's a feature. If you remembered everything with equal weight, you'd be overwhelmed with irrelevant detail. The ability to forget is essential to the ability to function.

AI memory needs similar selectivity. Not every email deserves the same weight. Not every task is equally relevant to your current situation. Not every conversation has lasting significance.

Our semantic compilation process handles this implicitly—by focusing on recent, relevant episodes rather than comprehensive archives. But we're actively researching more sophisticated forgetting mechanisms: ways to identify which information is likely to remain relevant and which can gracefully fade.

AI can develop this same knowledge, faster and more comprehensively than humans. But only if we build systems that actually remember.
